Component 2c: Silent Cinema
Component 2c is the Silent Cinema section of the course which is worth 7% of the Film Studies A-Level and 20 marks are available. Like component 2b there are two questions in which we are to pick one to answer within a 30 minute time period.
Like always, the core study areas are: the Key Elements (Cinematography, Sound, Editing, Mise-en-scène and Performance), Aesthetics and Representation (Age, Gender, Ethnicity and Culture. The specialist study areas of component 2c are:
Contexts: Cultural, Historical Institutional, Political, Social and Technological;
Critical debates, realist and expressive
For this area of the course we will be studying four films by Buster Keaton, these are:
One Week (Buster Keaton, 1920)
The Scarecrow (Buster Keaton, 1920)
The High Sign (Buster Keaton, 1921)
Cops (Buster Keaton, 1922)
Assessment Objectives:
A01: To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of elements of film
A02: To apply knowledge and understanding of elements of film to analyse how filmmakers employ the Key Elements of Film to create earning and convey messages and values to audiences.
